From its conception in 1911 the Maybell Women's Club, a group of area women, has been a positive force in the improvement of their community. The school, the town park, the library and the cemetery are all projects that were either begun or enhanced over the years by this group of women volunteering to improve and maintain their community. Over the years the Maybell Women's Club has been known as the Goodwill Club, The Young Homemakers, the Community Club and known for the last 50 years as the Maybell Women's Club. Whatever the name it has, it's always been a club with a consistent desire to make Maybell a better place to live for nearly a 100 years.
Maybell, Colorado is in the Northwest Corner of Colorado. It is a ranching community 30 miles west of Craig in Moffat County. The population, including the surrounding area, is approximately 100 community members. Maybell is an Unincorporated Community governed by the Moffat County Commissioners. They provide the streets and roads and have a County Shop located in Maybell, Law Enforcement, Library, Ambulance Service and a small all Volunteer Fire Department. There is a church, post office, one small mercantile, one small motel and a hotel, which was built in 1894. Maybell has the last "One Room" school left in Colorado. We also have a small, often used, Community Center owned by Moffat County and governed by an appointed board. As US 40 falls under the Colorado Department of Transportation, we also have a Highway Shop located here. Members of the community belong to several various service organizations and governing boards.
The Maybell Women's Club owns and is responsible for the up-keep and care taking of the Maybell Cemetery. The cemetery has a long and historically important past. In 1938 Carey J. Barber and Frank Haynes deeded approximately 2 acres of land to the Maybell Women's Club to be used as a public cemetery. Known as the "Maybell Cemetery" – the Maybell Women's Club has held several fund raisers for fencing and other improvements at the cemetery. There are currently 60 gravesites, many of which are veterans, at the cemetery.
The Women's Club has an annual Memorial Day Celebration at the cemetery. We coordinate with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion out of Craig and our local pastor to do a ceremony annually. Many members of the community always attend.
The Maybell Women's Club continues to be active in the community. One of our most appreciated functions is hosting funeral dinners for local families. We also raise money for our Fire Department, pay for field trips for the local school children, and contribute money to our local library. We provide candy sacks for Santa's visit at our school Christmas Program.
The Club publishes a newsletter September through June called the Maybell Gazette. It contains news items about people living in the area, meeting dates and times, and general information for those who live here. We include pages written by individuals in the surrounding area. Approximately 160 newsletters are mailed each of the 10 months we publish. Maybell Women's Club covers the cost, but numerous individuals in the area also donate money, stamps and materials to the newsletter. If you would like to read this newsletter please go to the News button and follow the links.
Because we have very limited restaurant facilities in Maybell we provide two meals each day for the participants of the North American Dog Agility Trials held in the Maybell Park each Memorial Day weekend.
Sombrero Ranches Great American Horse Drive passes through our community one Sunday each May. Maybell Women's Club has concessions available for those who come to Maybell to watch this historic and exciting event.
